August

Summer days
Syrup slow
Hazing gay
Picnics in hayfields
Drifting downstream
Flashing trout flanks
Overhead swifts whirl
And thunder cows
Stand under the oak
Hedge forests hum
With a billion insect
Murmurs and beyond
The downs lightning
Feasts flickerfast
In the orchards
Fruit plumps for
Autumn pies and
Bobbing boys
And we carve
Sticks with our
Knives and tie
Knots in string
And swing across
The stream and
Back and scream
And the girls
Whisper secrets
